By chance, Dr Gideon Fell stumbled across this case when finding the door to the house ajar. The story revolves around the murder of a tramp found dead in a house in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

I don’t know if this is something that has ever happened to you. A second reading, proved me how wrong I had been with my first impression. But once I read some of the reviews included below, I thought twice and I wondered if I wasn’t missing something. To begin with, the story doesn’t revolve around any impossible crime or locked room mystery which is perhaps why I wasn’t very impressed with this novel after a first reading. The reason for this is that it doesn’t fit well with what one might expect from Carr in the series. My Take: With Death-Watch, one of my last reads of 2022, I took up my project of reading a selection of the best books in Dr Gideon Fell series, even though there might be some controversy about including Death-Watch in this category. For Dr Gideon Fell this is the only case that has ever really frightened him, and before he can solve it he must find answers to some seemingly impossible questions: why was Calvin Boscombe standing near the corpse with a silencer on his gun? Who locked the attic door? And what has become of the sixteenth-century death-watch?
